There are four main ways to get from Istanbul Airport into the city: metro, Havaist bus, taxi and private transfer. The cheapest option is not always the best one – your luggage, group size and landing time all change the answer. Here we compare the options by travel time, comfort and cost, and explain what determines the price of a private transfer.
Options at a glance
| Option | Time to centre | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metro (M11 + change) | About 60–90 min | Lowest; per person with an Istanbulkart | Solo travellers with light luggage |
| Havaist bus | About 60–120 min (traffic) | Low; per person | Hotels near a Havaist stop |
| Taxi | About 45–75 min | Metered; varies with traffic and route | Travellers who don't want to pre-book |
| Private transfer | About 45–75 min | Fixed in advance, per vehicle | Families, groups, heavy luggage, late arrivals |
Metro and Havaist fares are set by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and change from time to time, so check the current tariffs on official sources. For lines and timetables see our Havaist guide, and for the Taksim area our Istanbul Airport to Taksim guide.
Taxi or private transfer?
Taxis are metered, so traffic, the route taken and bridge or motorway tolls can push up the fare, and space for people and luggage is limited. With a private transfer the price is known when you book and it is per vehicle: for a family of four, the cost per person is often close to or lower than a taxi. Your driver also meets you with your name, tracks your flight and does not charge extra for delays.
What determines the price of a private transfer?
- Distance and area: Central European-side districts, the Asian side and out-of-town addresses are priced differently.
- Vehicle type: Sedan, VIP minivan or minibus.
- Passengers and luggage: Larger groups and more bags need a bigger vehicle.
- Extras: Child seats or extra stops.
- One way or return: Booking both trips together makes planning easier.
Fixed-price private transfer
See the price for your route instantly on the booking page. Flight tracking, a name-sign meet & greet and free waiting if your flight is delayed are included.
Tips for an affordable but comfortable transfer
- Book early: Vehicle availability gets tight in summer and on public holidays.
- Choose the right size: Don't book a bigger car than you need – a sedan is enough for 1–3 people.
- Share with your group: As the price is per vehicle, travellers going to the same hotel can share one car.
- Book the return together: Plan both journeys in one go.
