Home to Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace, Sultanahmet is where many visitors to Istanbul choose to stay. It lies about 50 km from Istanbul Airport. Here we compare the four ways to get there by travel time, changes and comfort.
The short answer
| Option | Time | Changes | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | About 50–75 min | None, door to door | Fixed price, name-sign meet & greet, easiest with luggage |
| Taxi | About 50–75 min | None | Metered; varies with traffic and tolls |
| Havaist bus | About 75–120 min | Walk or tram from the stop | Per-person fare, depends on traffic |
| Metro + tram | About 80–100 min | 2–3 changes | Cheapest, hard work with suitcases |
1. Private transfer
Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with your name and takes you straight to your hotel. Some streets in Sultanahmet are narrow or pedestrian-only; in that case your driver drops you at the nearest point and helps with your bags. The price is per vehicle and fixed when you book.
Fixed-price private transfer
See the price for your route instantly on the booking page. Flight tracking, a name-sign meet & greet and free waiting if your flight is delayed are included.
2. Taxi
Taxi ranks are on the arrivals level. Fares are metered, so traffic and the route taken affect the total. Make sure the meter is running before you set off, and show your hotel name and address in writing.
3. Havaist bus
Havaist runs buses from the airport to different parts of the city, including a line towards the historic peninsula. You may need a short walk or a tram ride from the stop to your hotel. See our Havaist guide for line numbers, stops and timetables. Pay with an Istanbulkart or a contactless card.
4. Metro and tram
The M11 metro line connects the airport with Gayrettepe. From there, change to the M2 line towards the historic peninsula, then take the T1 tram to the Sultanahmet stop. It is the cheapest option, but several changes and stairs make it tiring with large suitcases. You need an Istanbulkart, available from machines at the airport.
Which should you choose?
- Families and groups with luggage: Private transfer – the per-vehicle price works out well per person.
- Late-night or early-morning arrivals: Private transfer or taxi, as public transport thins out.
- Solo travellers with light bags: Havaist or metro are budget options.
